While it was hard to give the right credit to the invertebrate models in my last photo, these are a lot easier. The Pacific sea nettle, Chrysaora Fuscescens, is a prominent animal on display at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. These nettles were photographed at the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, just 5 miles South of Monterey.

Giant Kelp Forest

These are the large floating canopies of the Giant Kelp, more specifically Macrocystis Pyrifera. I love how the light comes through the web of their large translucent blades.

The kelp forests are home to hundreds of species of fish but have been dangerous to humans. Although rare, there have been drownings of both abalone hunting free divers and recreational scuba divers after having become tangled in the kelp.

The Benwood Wreck

The Benwood Wreck is an artificial reef off of the Florida Keys. The Benwood was sunk on April 9, 1942 after an unintentional collision with another boat, the Robert C. Tuttle. Both boats were traveling at night and rumors of German U-Boats in the area had convinced them to sail in black-out. Neither ship saw the other until a collision was unavoidable. After some attempts to save the boat, the captain of the Benwood gave the order to abandon ship.

Today was hectic but went well. Taking photos underwater adds so many variables it gets hard to control it all. The blanket shown on the side would not stop floating away despite being weighed down with twenty washers and bolts. I think the weirdest part of the day was when I was standing at the bottom of the deep end by my self, breathing from an air tank and trying to stretch out an intense cramp in my calf.

I need to do some processing and retouching before I’m ready to let the images from today’s shoot out in to the wild. I’ll just share some photos of Jonas and Christian, who helped me out so much today.

There is a goal that I have; it is to revolutionize underwater photography. It’s been disappointing so far because I wasn’t able to achieve my goal in my very first try, or my second! There seems to be so much learning and practicing in the way that I wonder if I’m really cut out to be the underwater photography prodigy. Why does success have to be so tied to work and effort?
