Sunset view from The Wreck, my favorite restaurant in my hometown; Mt. Pleasant, SC, and yes that is a pair of dolphins swimming up Shem Creek like it’s no big deal.
The Wreck, named after one of the many boats tossed upon the shore by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, is situated on Shem Creek, a small inlet that many of the town’s shrimp boats dock at. To get to it you have to take a round about way behind the dockyard and there are no signs pointing the way. There aren’t any signs on the building either to suggest that this is a restaurant open to the public. Inside they serve fresh seafood on paper plates and it is simply delicious. The dining area is mostly comprised of a big screened in porch that overlooks the water. Ever since my mother introduced me to it, I like to go eat there every time I come home.

i love the photo of the table with the sun high (low?) in the back. i can feel it just looking at it
Wow! In 1978 I left San Francisco for Mt Pleasant to help someone make wood fired pizzas (go figure) The pizza idea was less than sucessful but I remember many many pleasant looong afternoons on Shem Creek, eatin’ shrumps and drinking beer – for me, the peak Southern experience!
Beautiful photo – just as I hold it in my mind’s eye.
I hope I get to visit this place one day. I’ve book marked it and full intend to try. What are your favorite meals there?
They have a seafood platter which I usually try to share. If I remember right it has shrimp, scallops, oysters, whatever fish is fresh, hominy, and hush puppies.
Don’t forget about the boiled peanuts…since I’m the one who introduced you to the place I think I deserve a print – I’ll take the bridge with the dolphins please.
Real food for real people!
